Int'l experts immerse in Shenzhen's dynamic practices of Chinese modernization

When Zoon Ahmed Khan, a research fellow at Tsinghua University, tried out an exoskeleton robot in Shenzhen, she reflected on the southern Chinese economic and tech hub's astonishing transformation over the past decades -- a development trajectory that few could have foreseen.

"A great number of the technologies we experience today, and the innovations I have encountered throughout China, target real-life difficulties," said the Pakistani scholar during a field trip as part of an international symposium on Monday. "The products are not only showcasing Shenzhen's achievements but, more importantly, inspiring visitors."

The delegation, consisting of international experts, scholars and guests, toured various sites across Shenzhen, to observe how modern technology and cultural heritage converge in this dynamic metropolis.

On the 116th floor of the Ping An Finance Center, the world's highest glass-floor cantilevered observation deck, the delegation visited an exhibition showcasing the city's latest sci-tech feats, such as DJI drones, Tencent AI office solutions, HONOR's embodied robots and Hypershell exoskeleton robots.

Rami Khalil, an Armenian expert at Sichuan International Studies University, said he was impressed by China's domestically designed Hualong One nuclear reactor.

"Green energy is a very essential part of Chinese culture. Instead of dominating nature, Chinese philosophy advocates integration," he said.

At the Eyes of the Greater Bay Area, the world's largest physical book mall, which commenced operations in September last year, Nathan Bonar, a research fellow at the Institute for Postmodern Development of China, purchased a book and a calligraphy copybook about Ci poetry of the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

"I really like the way it's set up. It's not just for purchasing books, but a space for people to actually read, enjoy themselves and interact with one another," said the book lover with a collection of more than 4,000 books.

While Shenzhen is often associated with technology, its achievements are deeply rooted in culture. "I'm encouraged by seeing people who know how to use technology to make their lives better and more enjoyable, so that they can sit down and read poetry," he added.

"China is deeply rooted in its own culture and civilization. Reading links people to knowledge, and this pursuit of knowledge also paves the way for modernity," said Fouzia Amin, a research fellow at the Understanding China Forum in Pakistan.

In Nantou Ancient Town, which boasts a history of nearly 1,700 years, cafes, specialty restaurants and art galleries line the ancient alleyways. For Bruno Guigue, a research fellow at France's University of Reunion, the town showcases that traditional culture and modern technology are fully compatible.

"Chinese people can develop humanoid robots while keeping their cultural roots. This is quite fascinating to me," said Guigue. "Shenzhen was once a tiny fishing village and has grown into a metropolis with innovation hubs and financial centers. It embodies a new China."

Gustavo Sabino Vaca Narvaja, former Argentine ambassador to China and director of the Center for Sinology Studies at the University of Buenos Aires, said the "Shenzhen Moment" represents a new stage of productivity brought by rapid technological progress and the integration of tradition and modernity that generates fresh innovation.

"China's growth and technological development have been achieved without losing its own identity, which constitutes a valuable asset for modernization," said the former diplomat. "That is also why I believe it offers opportunities for the Global South."

华南师范大学党委书记王恒胤，阿根廷前驻华大使、布宜诺斯艾利斯大学汉学研究中心主任牛望道，北京师范大学学术委员会主任韩震等与会中外专家学者认为，中国式现代化以中华文明为深厚根基，在传统与现代、民族性与世界性之间探索新的发展路径，为全球南方国家自主探索现代化道路提供了重要启示。巩固文化主体性、深化文明交流互鉴，有助于不同文明在相互尊重中增进理解，在交流对话中凝聚共识，共同应对人类社会面临的全球性挑战。

本届研讨会由习近平文化思想研究中心指导，习近平文化思想研究中心新华社协同研究基地、广东省委宣传部、华南师范大学主办。会议期间发布《新大众文艺的繁荣发展与世界影响》智库报告，并举行“新时代人文经济学”“繁荣互联网条件下的新大众文艺”“深化文明交流互鉴”“哲学社会科学自主知识体系构建”四个分论坛。

Asia-Pacific Media Forum unveils consensus on shared prosperity

A consensus on jointly promoting the prosperity and development of the Asia-Pacific region was unveiled at the Asia-Pacific Media Forum, which kicked off on Saturday in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province.

More than 400 representatives from over 40 countries and regions, as well as from UN agencies and international organizations, attended the event. At the opening ceremony, 16 founding organizations from China and abroad jointly formed the Organizing Committee of the Asia-Pacific Media Partnership Program.

The Shenzhen Consensus of the Asia-Pacific Media Forum noted that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) stands as the region's highest-level, most extensive, and most influential economic cooperation mechanism. Since its establishment more than three decades ago, APEC has propelled the region to the forefront of global development and helped it become the most dynamic region in the global economy.

The representatives pointed out that openness, innovation and cooperation are of great significance for promoting the prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region. They are committed to championing the consensus on openness, safeguarding the multilateral trading system, and reporting and explaining concepts and practices such as the construction of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, regional connectivity, and the stability of industrial and supply chains. They will also facilitate policy alignment and experience sharing, and comprehensively showcase the region's progress across various sectors.

Attendees agreed that digital, intelligent and green transformation presents significant opportunities for the region's development. Committed to interpreting digital development policies and promoting positive narratives on digital technologies, they pledged to expand the application and popularization of artificial intelligence in the media sector and to broaden the media's reach and amplify its influence. Meanwhile, they expressed their willingness to encourage identifying and promoting best practices in areas such as clean energy and low-carbon buildings to guide green development in Asia-Pacific countries.

Calling on the media to play a unique role in promoting cultural and civilizational exchange, the attendees reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the principles of truthfulness, objectivity and fairness in communication, and jointly fostering a sound media ecosystem.

They are also committed to deepening media exchanges and cooperation by launching joint interview programs and other collaborative projects, while promoting cultural and people-to-people ties in areas including culture, tourism and youth engagement, with a view to enhancing mutual understanding, trust and friendship among the peoples of the region.

The representatives believed that Chinese modernization offers new opportunities for the region and beyond. During visits to six cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, including Guangzhou and Shenzhen, they saw first-hand progress in tech innovation, industrial upgrading and coordinated growth in the area. They also advocate sharing of development experience in the region and support development paths suited to national conditions.

At the forum, Xinhua News Agency, together with media partners from the Asia-Pacific region, jointly initiated a global multimedia communication program centered on the theme of "Asia-Pacific development stories."

Shenzhen City also launched a media cooperation campaign at the event, focusing on technology sharing, joint content creation and talent cultivation.

Also on Saturday, an exhibition of scientific and technological innovation achievements was held on the sidelines of the forum, providing a platform for Asia-Pacific media to deepen exchanges and cooperation in applying sci-tech innovations.

More than 30 companies from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area showcased their latest high-tech products at the exhibition that featured four main sections: intelligent media technology, embodied AI, smart cities, and smart living.

China will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Shenzhen in November this year, which will mark the country's third hosting of the event following Shanghai in 2001 and Beijing in 2014.

This year marks the APEC "China Year," with the theme of "Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together." Approximately 300 APEC-related meetings and events will take place in multiple Chinese cities throughout the year.

Adjacent to Hong Kong, Shenzhen was one of China's first special economic zones and has since evolved, over four decades, into a global hub for innovation and advanced manufacturing.

Think tank report highlights value of China's new popular literature, art

New popular literature and art, characterized by broad public participation in the era of the internet and AI, are helping China better express itself and contribute to a fairer global cultural order, according to a think tank report released on Sunday.

Titled "The Flourishing Development and Global Influence of New Popular Literature and Art," the report was issued by the National High-Level Think Tank of Xinhua News Agency at an international symposium held in Shenzhen, a tech hub in south China's Guangdong Province.

The report said new popular literature and art refer to "a brand-new, composite literary and artistic ecosystem that has emerged in the realm of literature and art, driven by the scientific and technological revolution encompassing the internet, big data and AI."

This ecosystem features broad public participation in creation, dissemination and sharing, and reflects the voice of the people and the themes of the times, according to the report.

"Rooted in everyday life, it responds to the aesthetic needs of the people...and is increasingly showcasing Chinese characteristics, style and manner in global cultural exchanges," the report noted.

At a time when globalization and digitalization converge, the report emphasized that new popular literature and art are employing a multiplicity of narratives to shift China's image from one "defined by others" to one "expressed by itself."

They draw on Eastern wisdom to offer a value reference for the shared dilemmas confronting humanity, the report stated. Through openness and collaboration, they help break up the concentrated structure of the global cultural industry. By harnessing technology, they contribute to building a fairer global cultural order.

Themed "Consolidate Cultural Subjectivity in Promoting Chinese Modernization," the symposium brought together about 130 experts, scholars and guests from home and abroad.

Hong Dayong, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said in his opening speech that China's efforts to strengthen its cultural subjectivity have offered insights for countries around the world to preserve their cultural characteristics and identities and explore development paths suited to their own civilizations.

Lyu Yansong, editor-in-chief of Xinhua News Agency, said in his address that Xinhua will further explore new ways of communication and expression, thus enabling countries around the world to gain a deeper understanding of the historical richness, intellectual depth and vitality of Chinese civilization through the vivid practice of Chinese modernization.

Four parallel sessions were held during the symposium, respectively themed "the humanomics in the new era," "promote new forms of literature and art for the general public in the internet age," "deepen exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations," and "build Chinese intellectual system in philosophy and social sciences."

The Asia-Pacific Media Forum opened on Saturday in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, with the theme of "Building a Path to Shared Prosperity for the Asia-Pacific Community: Media Consensus and Action."

Li Shulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the forum and delivered a keynote speech. Huang Kunming, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, attended the forum and delivered a speech.

Participating guests noted that this year marks 2026 APEC "China Year," during which China will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting. They expressed their belief that with support from all sides, the summit will yield fruitful outcomes and elevate Asia-Pacific cooperation to new heights.

Participating guests emphasized that development and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region depend on the active participation of media. The media are expected to share stories of openness and integration, provide comprehensive coverage of the region's progress and achievements across various fields, and help foster a favorable public opinion environment for the region's open development.

Participating guests noted that the media should actively promote outcomes of the series of APEC activities, interpret policies and measures of various economies to support scientific and technological innovation, and build regional consensus for innovative development.

They also called for deepening results-oriented cooperation in joint reporting, technological innovation and personnel training, and leveraging media exchanges to carry forward civilizations, spread culture and convey goodwill, so as to enhance mutual understanding and closer bonds among the peoples of the Asia-Pacific.

The forum was co-hosted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, Xinhua News Agency and the Guangdong provincial government, and organized by the Shenzhen municipal government.
