China and Arab states share broad prospects for advancing practical cooperation in various fields, said a Xinhua think tank report released here on Wednesday.

Titled "Achievements, Opportunities, and Prospects of China-Arab Cooperation in the New Era" and released by Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with Xinhua News Agency, the report noted that in response to the global energy transition, China and the Arab states are moving with the trend, positioning new energy cooperation as a new growth driver and gradually forming a pattern characterized by the coordinated development of traditional and renewable energy, as well as mutual empowerment through both technology and projects.

While maintaining a high level of cooperation in traditional oil and gas trade, the two sides have significantly accelerated collaboration in areas such as hydrogen energy and solar power, said the report.

China also supports its energy enterprises and financial institutions in participating in renewable energy projects in Arab countries with a total installed capacity exceeding 3 million kilowatts, it added.

The two sides also see strong momentum in cooperation in such areas as industrial capacity building, scientific and technological innovation, education and tourism, said the report. ■

Since the first China-Arab States Summit in 2022, China and the Arab side have taken the goal of building a China-Arab community with a shared future in the new era as their guiding principle, advancing cooperation across various fields, said a Xinhua think tank report released here on Wednesday.

As a new wave of global scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating, China is actively working with the Arab states to foster flagship cooperation projects in innovation-related fields, said the report titled "Achievements, Opportunities, and Prospects of China-Arab Cooperation in the New Era," released by Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with Xinhua News Agency.

China has actively transferred advanced and applicable technologies to Arab states, said the report, taking the China-aided livestock technology demonstration center in Mauritania as an example. The center has successfully cultivated nearly 1,000 mu (about 67 hectares) of forage crops on the edge of the Sahara Desert, turning barren land into an oasis.

Meanwhile, China has worked with Arab states, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Oman and Morocco to develop several high-standard science and industrial parks jointly, it added.

The Global South Media and Think Tank Forum Chinese-Arab Partnership Conference opened Tuesday at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

The two-day event, under the theme "Pooling Wisdom, Embarking on a New Journey: Jointly Building a China-Arab Community with a Shared Future," gathers about 250 representatives from around 110 media outlets, think tanks, government institutions, enterprises from China and Arab countries, as well as from international and regional organizations.

In his opening remarks, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, secretary-general of the League of Arab States, said that countries of the Global South are facing a wide range of challenges. The Global Governance Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, he noted, has opened up broad prospects for promoting the democratization of international relations, narrowing the North-South divide, resolving global crises through peaceful means, and building a better future together.

Arab and Chinese media outlets and think tanks urgently need to strengthen cooperation, build consensus, foster strong bonds between the Arab and Chinese peoples, and promote a more just and equitable international order, he stressed.

Holding the Global South Media and Think Tank Forum Chinese-Arab Partnership Conference at the headquarters of the League of Arab States carries important significance, Gheit said, noting that it will promote experience-sharing between Arab and Chinese media outlets and think tanks, open up broader prospects for cooperation, deepen exchanges and mutual learning in ideas and civilizations between the two countries, and make Arab-China media and think tanks an important pillar in strengthening Arab-China friendship.

President of Xinhua News Agency Fu Hua, for his part, said that under the strategic guidance of President Xi and the leaders of Arab states, China-Arab relations have entered their best period in history: strategic mutual trust has been steadily deepened, cooperation across multiple fields has continued to expand, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges have yielded fruitful results.

Media and think tanks play a vital role in China-Arab friendship and cooperation by amplifying voices, contributing intellectual insight, and connecting hearts, Fu said, stressing that Xinhua will continue to promote and explain in depth the idea of a community with a shared future for mankind and the four major global initiatives proposed by President Xi, fully showcase the vivid practice of China and Arab countries walking hand in hand and engaging in pragmatic cooperation, further improve and strengthen cooperation mechanisms between Chinese and Arab media and think tanks, promote closer exchanges through more practical measures, advance exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations and closer people-to-people ties, and contribute media and think-tank strength to building a China-Arab community with a shared future in the new era.

In his address, Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang said that 10 years ago, President Xi visited the headquarters of the League of Arab States and delivered an important speech in this very hall, offering China's answer to the "Middle East question," stressing that recalling it today makes it all the more instructive.

Not long ago, President Xi put forward a four-point proposal on safeguarding and promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, which has received broad support and a positive response from the international community, Liao added.

The League of Arab States is an important platform for Arab countries to strengthen solidarity and self-reliance, he said, noting China-Arab relations have a long and enduring history, and this year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Arab states.

The Chinese ambassador expressed his belief that the forum will further promote the exchange of governance experience between China and Arab countries and deepen their traditional friendship and people-to-people bonds. The Chinese side, he said, stands ready to work with Arab friends to carry forward the spirit of China-Arab friendship and stride forward on the bright path toward building a higher-level China-Arab community with a shared future.

Chinese and foreign guests attending the event said that China and Arab countries, as important members of the Global South, have always been committed to promoting peace and development and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation, playing an important role in advancing international fairness and justice and improving global governance.

They added that China-Arab cooperation has become a model of solidarity and common development among developing countries, expressing hope that Global South media outlets and think tanks will further deepen China-Arab exchanges and mutual learning, build consensus on development, promote more practical cooperation outcomes, and advance substantive cooperation between Chinese and Arab media and think tanks.

Fu presented Gheit with the Arabic edition of the book China's Governance Under Xi Jinping's Leadership. The opening ceremony also featured a China-Arab art exhibition titled "Art Integration: Across Millennia, the Silk Road Culture Endures," as well as a certificate-awarding ceremony honoring outstanding contributions by Global South joint communication partners.

The conference is co-hosted by Xinhua and the League of Arab States. During the event, participants will conduct in-depth discussions on topics including peaceful development, diverse narratives, digital innovation, and mutual learning among civilizations. The Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with Xinhua News Agency, released a report titled "The Theory of Cultural Empowerment: China's Cultural Consciousness in Marching Toward High-Quality Development" on Thursday.

The report was issued during a forum on exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations to mark the 20th anniversary of the China-Greece comprehensive strategic partnership.

The report systematically elaborates on the underlying logic of empowering economic and social development through culture, along with China's practices, methodology and global inspirations in this field.

For China, empowering economic and social development with culture is an inevitable requirement for the new stage of development, a contemporary innovation of Marxist cultural theory, and a strategic choice amid the evolving global landscape of competition and cooperation among civilizations, said the report.

China Focus: Brick-and-mortar bookstores turn to digital tools to reconnect with readers

China's brick-and-mortar bookshops, once under pressure from the growth of online reading and e-commerce, are now adopting digital tools in an effort to reconnect with readers.

Founded in 2014 in Binzhou, east China's Shandong Province, Puhe Reading Space began as a small traditional bookshop reliant on book sales. When online competition squeezed margins, it moved away from price wars and began using digital platforms to cultivate reader communities.

"Online channels such as our e-shop and WeChat groups allow us to maintain full-lifecycle engagement with our members," said Wang Hong, the bookshop's founder. She added that the bookstore also uses livestream sessions as a kind of "online living room," where staff and long-time readers can deepen their connections through cultural conversations.

A recent national reading survey showed that the overall reading rate among Chinese adults rose to 82.3 percent in 2025. However, digital formats now dominate the market, with nearly 80 percent of readers using mobile phones to meet their literary needs.

Industry experts said brick-and-mortar bookstores will need to offer immersive, in-person experiences that digital reading cannot replicate, turning bookstores into part of a broader lifestyle.

"Even in the internet era, people cannot confine all aspects of life to the virtual world. They still need a connection with what is around them," said Ma Ruijie, an associate professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, Nankai University.

To draw people back into physical spaces, some bookstores are experimenting with formats that go beyond traditional reading, combining immersive in-person experiences with digital tools to reshape how readers engage with books.

In a shopping mall in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou, a bookstore has introduced five small theaters that stage scenes from classic books as immersive performances, turning what was once a quiet retail space into a cultural venue.

In Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province, a bookstore has developed a circular reading model through an online mini-program, allowing readers to resell books after finishing them while receiving recommendations based on their reading habits.

Puhe has also embraced artificial intelligence (AI), hosting workshops that teach readers how to turn passages from classic literature into visual posters.

"AI has not replaced reading," Wang said. "Instead, it has become a powerful tool for broadening cultural reach."

Across the sector, such efforts reflect a broader rethinking of the services that bookstores try to provide.

Physical bookstores remain irreplaceable as cultural and social spaces, where readers seek not only books, but spiritual resonance and a sense of belonging, said Zhao Jianying, a professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

He added that digital reading and physical reading serve different functions and are complementary rather than substitutes. "Digital reading solves the problem of access, while physical bookstores and print reading enable deeper engagement," he said.

That shift is also seeing strong policy support. A regulation on promoting nationwide reading, which took effect in February, encourages brick-and-mortar bookstores to improve reading conditions and carry out reading activities, while strengthening their role in providing public reading services.

This year's government work report for the first time calls for supporting the development of physical bookstores. At the same time, local governments have introduced measures such as rent reductions and integration into public cultural systems.

Zhang Xiao, an industry observer based in Zhejiang Province, said the core competitiveness of brick-and-mortar bookstores lies in combining quality content with improved operational efficiency.

AI technology helps address high labour costs and low service efficiency, Zhang said, adding that the sector is expected to encourage bookstores across the country to share resources and work more closely through technology, in an effort to explore more sustainable business models.

China is home to about 120,000 brick-and-mortar bookstores. Against this backdrop, some long-standing bookstores are beginning to return.

For many Chinese readers, the inaugural "reading week," designated for the fourth week of April, has become a moment to pick up a book, in print or digital form, and set personal reading goals for the year ahead. Across the country, book fairs, sales promotions, author-reader meetups and neighborhood reading events are drawing crowds, turning the initiative into a nationwide celebration of reading.

"Extending reading promotion from one day to a full week is not merely a matter of time, but an institutional upgrade of the national reading strategy," said Feng Shixin, president of the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication.

This policy push comes as reading indicators across the country continue to improve.

Between 2012 and 2024, China's adult reading rate rose from 76.3 percent to 82.1 percent. By 2025, it had edged up further to 82.3 percent.

Much of this growth is being driven by digital reading and a diverse range of reading events. Together, they are fueling a genuine reading renaissance.

On a crowded Beijing subway carriage at rush hour, heads are tilted downward toward glowing screens, while buds for listening are nestled in many ears. Some are scrolling, some are tapping, but a growing number are reading or listening to books. This is digital reading at work: it fits perfectly into fragmented time -- commutes, waiting lines, the lull before sleep.

Data show that some 80.8 percent of adults now read digitally, whether through e-books, online literature or audiobooks. By the end of 2025, China's digital reading user base had reached 689 million.

Behind this massive digital readership lies a supply-side boom. China's digital titles have surpassed 70 million, putting an ocean of content at readers' fingertips.

What has changed is not just the sheer volume, but how it reaches readers. From web novels and paid knowledge to audiobooks and short video summaries, digital offerings have become not only vast, but are everywhere. In a sense, readers no longer go hunting for books. Instead, content finds them. And this shift, observers say, has pushed up reading rates noticeably.

Online literature, a favorite among Chinese readers, has improved in quality. Once dismissed as amateur writing, it has now earned its place in what insiders call mainstream literature, with multiple works shortlisted for national literary awards, attracting an ever-growing audience.

Another draw for digital readers is interactivity, something traditional paper books simply cannot offer. According to a digital reading user surnamed Li, this very feature has boosted her sense of engagement and made reading more enjoyable.

All of this has translated into striking commercial momentum. The market size of digital reading has nearly doubled over the past five years, growing from 30.25 billion yuan (about 4.4 billion U.S. dollars) to 59.48 billion yuan.

China on Thursday announced new measures to evaluate and assess the performance of local governments in terms of carbon peaking and neutrality efforts as the nation seeks to accelerate a comprehensive green transition in economic and social development.

The new measures, contained in a document jointly issued by the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council recently, aim to accelerate the establishment of a dual-control system for both the total amount and intensity of carbon emissions. They also aim to guide local Party committees and governments in adopting a sound approach to performance assessment, while ensuring accountability for meeting carbon reduction targets.

According to the measures, during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), together with relevant departments, will formulate a carbon peaking action plan. The plan is intended to achieve the targets of reducing carbon emission intensity by more than 65 percent from 2005 levels, increasing the share of non-fossil energy consumption to 25 percent, and peaking both coal and oil consumption by 2030.

The measures also call for continued control on coal power capacity and generation, and for newly added clean energy to gradually cover the growth in electricity consumption.

The assessment system consists of control indicators and supporting indicators. Control indicators examine total carbon emissions, carbon intensity reduction, total coal consumption, total oil consumption, and the share of non-fossil energy consumption. Supporting indicators, by focusing on the fields of energy efficiency, industries, urban-rural development, transport, public institutions, and carbon emissions trading, will look at local regions' efforts that support carbon peaking and neutrality goals.

Provincial-level Party committees and governments are required to draft their own carbon peaking action plans during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, setting five-year and annual targets and measures consistent with national objectives.

Under the measures, local governments that meet all their control and supporting indicators will be rated "excellent." Those that fail to meet one or more control indicators, or three or more supporting indicators will be rated "unqualified." All remaining local governments will be rated "qualified."

The assessment results will serve as a key reference for the evaluation, appointment and supervision of provincial Party and government leadership teams and officials. Corrective measures and timelines are also required to be drawn up in regions that fail to qualify in meeting the assessment criteria.

According to the document, starting from the 16th Five-Year Plan period (2031-2035), the NDRC will also lead the formulation of national carbon emission control action plans in the first year of each five-year planning cycle, and local regions will issue corresponding plans to progressively achieve carbon neutrality.

China has set the dual carbon goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.

Systematic scheme: How recent moves expose Japan's neo-militarist agenda

Step by step, move by move, Japan is quietly but proactively dismantling the postwar architecture that has kept it anchored as a pacifist nation for nearly 80 years.

In about a month, a cascade of provocative, tightly coordinated actions -- from honoring war criminals and lifting bans on lethal weapons to deploying offensive missiles and projecting military power abroad -- has laid bare a deliberate, systematic agenda: to rearm without restraint, rewrite history without accountability, and reposition itself as an openly offensive military power.

The pattern is no accident and sounds alarming. It appears to be a carefully crafted blueprint for neo-militarism, putting regional and global peace at increasing risk.

LEGAL EROSION

Article 9 of Japan's constitution, which renounces war and bans "war potential," has long been a legal pillar of the post-World War II order. Now it is under sustained attack.

Earlier this month, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, in her first address as party president at the Liberal Democratic Party's national convention, declared that "the time has come" to reform the constitution, saying that "we would like to hold next year's convention with a proposal for a constitutional amendment in sight."

Policy changes are outpacing formal amendments. Passed this week, the new defense equipment rules allow Japan to export lethal weapons without prior Diet approval, tearing down a longstanding firewall against Japan becoming a major arms exporter.

Just days later, Japan's House of Representatives passed a bill to establish a national intelligence committee, aiming to centralize the country's intelligence capabilities under one council.

The Japanese government has reportedly begun considering the nationalization of manufacturing facilities such as defense equipment factories, which is expected to be one of the key topics when Japan moves to revise its three security documents later this year.

The Takaichi administration's attempt to revise the constitution has drawn rounds of protests at home. About 36,000 Japanese people gathered around the parliament building in Tokyo on Sunday to call for the protection of Article 9. It was the second such protest to draw about 30,000 people since April 8.

MILITARY BUILDUP

Japan's military buildup has entered a sharply more aggressive phase.

The country has expanded its defense budget for 14 consecutive years, with its spending plan for fiscal 2026 surpassing 9 trillion yen (about 56.31 billion U.S. dollars), an all-time high. Funding is channeled explicitly into standoff counterattack capabilities, missile stockpiles, unmanned systems, air and missile defense, and defense industrial capacity.

Recently, long-range missiles with counterstrike capabilities have been brought into service for the first time at two Ground Self-Defense Force bases in the country. The upgraded Type 12 land-to-ship guided missile boasts an operational range far exceeding Japan's territorial boundaries.

The Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF) is also undergoing a sweeping reorganization, including what Japan calls the "largest-ever reorganization" of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, along with an expansion of operations in the cognitive domain and the enlargement of the Space Operations Group.

Japan is also rapidly turning expanded military muscle into regional power projection. This week, Japan sent some 1,400 personnel, its largest-ever contingent, to the annual joint military drills conducted by the Philippines and the United States, marking the first time the Japan SDF has fully participated in the exercises.

Hiroshi Shiratori, a professor with Japan's Hosei University, said that the reorganization of the SDF and deployment of long-range missiles will further strengthen offensive capabilities and intensify regional tensions.

IDEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING

Underpinning the military push is a continuous campaign to reshape historical memory.

This week, Takaichi made two consecutive offerings to the notorious Yasukuni Shrine, a symbol of Japanese militarism and wartime aggression that enshrines World War II Class-A war criminals. More than 100 Japanese lawmakers paid group visits.

More insidiously, in the latest batch of high school textbooks authorized by Japan's education ministry for use from the 2027 academic year, certain history textbooks once again appear to downplay, deny, or even glorify the country's history of wartime aggression, as part of efforts to systematically erase public memory of war crimes and legitimize a nationalist, unrepentant worldview.

Meanwhile, it's easy to find Japanese media posting narratives hyping "external threats" and stoking public hostility toward neighboring countries, as Japan's ruling authorities seek to manipulate public opinion by framing a narrative of confrontation, and to carry out ideological mobilization to pave the way for constitutional revision and military expansion, according to observers.

Nurturing militarist ideology leads to rising extremist sentiments. On March 24, an active-duty SDF officer broke into the Chinese embassy in Tokyo with a knife. The National Defense Academy in Japan reportedly has an annual practice of paying group visits to the Yasukuni war shrine, and their textbooks are filled with content distorting and whitewashing Japan's history of aggression during WWII.

The year 2026 marks the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Tokyo trials, which found Japanese militarism and militarists guilty of launching and executing the war of aggression and related crimes.

"Today, 80 years later, Japanese neo-militarism is rearing its ugly head and gaining strength, threatening to cast a shadow on world peace and security," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a press conference on Wednesday.

"The international community must respond resolutely to prevent any possible resurgence of Japanese militarism," Guo added.

Arnaud said they wrote about their love for China and how they learn about Chinese culture, from practicing calligraphy and painting to memorizing Tang poetry.

Back in April 2023, in south China's Guangzhou, Xi and Macron shared a memorable cultural moment while listening to a mesmerizing performance of "High Mountains and Flowing Water" on the ancient Chinese instrument, the qin. "Only Zhiyin (bosom friends) can understand this music," Xi told Macron, explaining the story behind the melody.

During their meeting in December 2025, Xi highlighted the importance of continuing to write brilliant chapters in people-to-people exchanges.

"We want to keep telling the story of 'High Mountains and Flowing Water,' and wish for the enduring friendship between China and France," said Arnaud.

Rinaudo, the vice principal, believes that young people are the hope of the future and need opportunities for open dialogue. She added that an increasing number of students are eager to see and experience China firsthand.

During his visit to France in May 2024, Xi announced China's plan to host more than 10,000 French students in three years and to double the number of European youth exchanges in China.

Leledy Elise, a 23-year-old French woman who has studied Chinese for over seven years and now works as a trilingual host in Chinese, French and English, said she hopes to continue sharing Chinese culture with the French public and helping to strengthen friendship and cooperation between China and France, as well as across Europe.

Tamara Grigore, a Romanian education professional who has organized several EU-China youth sci-tech exchange programs, told Xinhua that Xi's reply had deeply inspired her.

"Youth exchanges are essential because they create genuine human connections" and serve as a vital way for European and Chinese youth to learn from one another and build lasting friendships, she said.

Adela Pascual, a graduate from the University of Valladolid, believes that exchanges between young people from Europe and China are essential as they help build bridges of understanding between different cultures.

"Students can play a key role in strengthening relations between Europe and China by promoting dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding," said Pascual, who has studied at Sun Yat-sen University and East China Normal University.

Student exchanges between China and Europe are of great significance, said Bartlomiej Krol, a second-year master's student in Chinese Studies at the University of Warsaw.

"By exchanging perspectives and sharing cultures, the younger generation can deepen mutual understanding and help people in different countries see more of each other's positive and constructive sides," said Krol. ■

China's economy remains a sturdy anchor in choppy waters

The curtain fell last Thursday on an important political gathering in China this year. As the "two sessions" concluded, Beijing sent an unequivocal message to a world grappling with heightened uncertainty: China will remain the most stable engine of the global economy.

At this year's two sessions, China set a GDP growth target of 4.5 percent to 5 percent for 2026, markedly outpacing the IMF's January projection of 3.3 percent for the global economy.

The target reflects China's confidence that rests on solid fundamentals. Over the past five years, China's economy has grown at an average annual rate of 5.4 percent, contributing around 30 percent to global growth -- more than the combined contribution of the G7 nations.

"The world can count on China to deliver new contributions to strong and sustainable global growth," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on the sidelines of the national legislature's annual session.

POWERING GLOBAL DEMAND

Perhaps the most visible channel through which China is stabilizing the world economy is its massive domestic market. As the world's second-largest consumer market, it is creating vital demand for global goods and services.

The 2026 government work report places "building a robust domestic market" first among the major tasks for this year. It pledges concrete measures including 250 billion yuan in ultra-long special treasury bonds for consumer goods trade-in programs, a 100-billion-yuan fiscal-financial coordination fund to spur domestic demand, and expanded interest subsidies for consumers and service providers.

The policy is already yielding results. In 2025, the trade-in program drove over 2.6 trillion yuan in sales, benefiting more than 360 million consumers. "The trade-in program has given our business a real shot in the arm," said Ai Yucheng, who works at a home appliance store in Yuncheng, Shandong Province. "Foot traffic has more than doubled, and customers are coming in ready to buy."

The outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) reinforces this priority, vowing to "unleash the potential of service consumption" and "promote the expansion and upgrading of goods consumption."

This vibrant demand extends beyond borders. During the recent Year of the Horse Spring Festival, Chinese travelers fanned out across traditional favorites and off-the-beaten-path destinations, with their spending providing a timely boost to tourism economies from Thailand to Europe.

The integration of AI with consumption -- creating new scenarios for smart homes, intelligent vehicles, and personalized services -- is generating new demand that benefits the entire global economy.

Yet China's economic contribution runs deeper than consumption alone. Committed to high-level opening up, it is advancing trade and investment liberalization on multiple fronts -- anchoring global supply chains while opening its doors wider to foreign goods and capital.

Scarcely three months into 2026, foreign investors are already doubling down: Republic of Korea semiconductor equipment maker STI is building a semiconductor manufacturing base in Guangzhou, with a total investment of approximately 12.4 billion yuan; German automotive parts giant Schaeffler is pouring an additional 1 billion yuan into a humanoid robotics factory in Jiangsu Province. The new investments underscore global confidence in China's dual role as both production hub and consumption engine.

BOOSTING QUALITY GROWTH

Technological innovation has become a key engine driving China's high-quality economic development, and a thriving Chinese economy is, in turn, a boon to the whole world.

China has placed a great emphasis on fostering "new quality productive forces" -- a paradigm shift that prioritizes scientific breakthroughs, green transformation, and digital integration over traditional factor-driven growth.

These efforts are built on strong fundamentals. China allocated 2.8 percent of its GDP to R&D in 2025, with annual investment exceeding 3.9 trillion yuan, up 8.1 percent year-on-year. The country's STEM graduates -- more than 5 million per year -- form a world-leading talent pool.

This human capital advantage is being channeled into strategic frontiers: from the AI model DeepSeek to the launch of the Fujian aircraft carrier equipped with electromagnetic catapults, and the successful test of a 240-tonne reusable liquid oxygen-kerosene engine for commercial spaceflight. Cutting-edge advances are unfolding across the board -- in new energy, integrated circuits, and intelligent transportation.

These innovations generate positive spillovers that benefit the global economy as a whole -- driving down costs, accelerating green transitions, and opening new market opportunities.

Rather than pursuing technological self-sufficiency in isolation, China is expanding international collaboration. Foreign multinationals -- from Tesla's Gigafactory and Roche's innovation hub in Shanghai to Apple's new applied research lab in Shenzhen -- are deepening their China-based R&D to tap into this dynamic ecosystem.

"China's economy offers the world a rare combination of stability, long-term growth potential, and open cooperation. Partnering with China means partnering with opportunity," said Gao Shijie, an official with the National Development and Reform Commission.

Across China: Micro dramas create, deliver success stories in central China village

When a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) scholar steps into his courtyard, he might find that a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) wedding is unfolding next door. Both scenes can be spotted simultaneously in Yuanqiao Village, where visitors could be forgiven for feeling that they were in parallel universes.

Indeed, this village, nestled in the city of Dengfeng, central China's Henan Province, has gained prominence as a filming location for micro dramas. It has been dubbed as a "Shudian," and is somewhat akin to China's Hollywood, Hengdian Township, located in east China's Zhejiang Province. The Chinese characters "Shu" and "Heng" literally mean vertical and horizontal, respectively. Micro dramas, notably, tend to be shot using a vertical format.

"Thanks to micro dramas, we saw a surge in visitors during the Spring Festival," said 75-year-old villager Yuan Tiefang, who is in his sixth year working as a caretaker for these old buildings.

The village, boasting a history of over 600 years and housing over 420 families, preserves a vast expanse of Ming and Qing courtyards. In 2018, a renovation project was initiated to restore the buildings.

"The well-preserved ancient architecture in this village is a rarity in central China," said Lyu Hongjun, president of the Songshan culture research association of Dengfeng.

Liu Wantao, Party chief of the village, told Xinhua that they had previously considered developing tourism, only to discover that tourists showed scant interest in the village.

The turning point came in 2023, when the filming crew of a micro drama arrived in the village. "They had planned a five-day schedule but completed all their work in just three days," he recalled. Before departing, they kept praising the village for its abundant ancient architectural resources, which eliminated the need for cumbersome scene changes.

The village gained further attention when a drama filmed there went viral, amassing over 30 million views and attracting more production teams. On some days, the village could see the filming of up to three micro dramas simultaneously.

Officially recognized as a genre in 2020, micro dramas have exploded in China. In 2024, the total revenue exceeded 50 billion yuan (about 7.2 billion U.S. dollars), up 34.9 percent year on year.

Villager An Qing'e, 63, occasionally works as an extra in these micro dramas. "The first time I had to recite lines, I was so nervous that I stumbled several times. Growing up in the village, it was tough to shake off my accent," she recalled.

An has since developed into a confident and eloquent storyteller, regaling tourists with details of the history of the ancient buildings. Many other villagers have had their turns in front of the cameras, while some have worked behind the scenes, moving props and setting up scenes. By doing such work, they have earned 200 yuan a day.

To date, more than 50 micro dramas have been filmed in Yuanqiao.

The village's newfound fame has been accompanied by an influx of tourists. According to Liu, the village can now accommodate over 200 guests and serve dinner to 1,200 people, all at once. In the year of 2025 alone, it received approximately 150,000 tourists, generating total tourism revenue of about 4 million yuan.

China unveiled its "No. 1 central document" for 2026 last month, outlining plans to advance agricultural and rural modernization and promote all-around rural revitalization. The newly-released 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) also calls for increasing investment in rural revitalization.

Looking ahead, Liu told Xinhua that they will continue renovating the ancient buildings, referring to them as the "roots of Yuanqiao and the foundation of development." He also mentioned that the village plans to invest 3 million yuan in creating drama sets, which will not only serve drama production but also enhance the experience for tourists. Yuanqiao, additionally, plans to collaborate with colleges to cultivate talent in the micro drama industry.

Yuan Tiefang, the oldest caretaker in the village, returned to work immediately after the Spring Festival holiday. "The Year of the Horse will be another busy year," he said.

The Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with Xinhua News Agency, on Tuesday released a report titled "Upholding International Justice and Jointly Addressing World Turbulence — Focusing on China's Solution to Global Governance" at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The report delves into the crucial global question: What kind of global governance system should be built, and how should global governance be reformed and improved? It provides a comprehensive and systematic explanation of the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, offering insights into China's vision for a more just and equitable global governance framework.

According to the report, the world has entered a new period of turbulence and transformation. Unilateralism, protectionism and hegemonism are on the rise, while deficits in peace, development, security and governance continue to grow. Problems related to the authority, representativeness and effectiveness of the global governance system have become more pronounced. Against this backdrop, reforming and improving the global governance system has emerged as a primary shared concern for the international community.

The report emphasizes that, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a natural member of the Global South and the world's largest developing country, China remains committed to being a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, a defender of the international order and a provider of public goods.

It highlights that the GGI, put forward by Xi in September 2025 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, offers a solution centered around five core concepts -- sovereign equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered approach and action-orientedness. The initiative, the report says, offers China's solution to building a more just and equitable global governance system, and injects impetus into revitalizing the central role and leadership of the United Nations.

The report notes that the five core concepts of the GGI are fully aligned with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, address the world's most pressing needs, and have received responses and support from more than 100 countries and international organizations.

China will firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order based on international law, resolutely stand on the right side of history's progress, and advance shoulder to shoulder with all progressive forces around the world, the report says.

It affirms that China will continue advancing the building of a community with a shared future for humanity and make unremitting efforts towards the noble cause of peace and development for all humanity.

The Xinhua Institute, with policy research as its primary focus, has conducted forward-looking, strategic and preparatory research on major domestic and global issues in recent years, producing numerous influential research outcomes.
